If you do not immediately have a vehicle to put your cherished number on,  the best option is to keep the registration on a Retention Certificate until such time as you wish to display it. This bears an initial cost of £25 on top of your Department of Transport transfer fee of £80. If you wish to keep your certificate for longer than a year, then you must renew it for £25 to continue to hold it  for a further twelve months. If you fail to renew your certificate, you will lose the right to assign your registration.
